History of Dangriga
Dangriga, formerly called Stann Creek Town, was officially re-named in 1975. The name “Dangriga” is derived from the Garifuna phrase “Dangrigeu Grigeu” which is a translation for Standing Creek. Dangriga boasts a unique phenomenon as the only location in Belize where you can take a dip in the sea and rinse in the fresh water at the same location, locally called “Bar Mouth”. This is where the North Stann Creek River empties into the Caribbean Sea.
Belize’s main economic activities revolve around the development of the citrus and banana industries. Dangriga and its surroundings are now considered an emerging cultural tourist destination with the reef, rainforest and culture as our major assets.
